Waring wins with Wilson clubs

Wilson Staff player Paul Waring captured his maiden European Tour victory at the Nordea Masters in Sweden today by winning a play-off at the first extra hole at the Hills Golf Club in Gothenburg.

Competing in his 200th European Tour event, Waring came out on top of a titanic battle with South African Thomas Aiken, a three-time Tour winner with whom he shared the overnight lead at -12, three shots clear of the field. In a virtual match play contest during the final round, they exchanged the lead until the last in regulation play, when Aiken made birdie to level the scores at 266 (-14) after 72 holes.

Waring, who joined Wilson in January 2015 and wears a branded cap as well as carrying the distinctive red Tour bag, then kept calm under pressure to make par at the par-5 18th, while his rival dropped a shot to concede the title to the Englishman.

“I wasn’t sure this day would come,” said the 33-year-old from Birkenhead, near Liverpool, who has suffered a series of serious injuries during his career. “I’ve tried so hard for many years to get to this point and it’s nice to finally get over the line and be holding the trophy. It wasn’t easy. I felt in control though and it feels like it’s all worth it,” he added.

Having finished on top in Scandinavia with prize money of €250,000, he now sits just outside the top 60 in the Race to Dubai alongside Major champions Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer.

“Paul is the second Wilson Staffer to win on the European Tour this year – after Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren secured victory at the Sicilian Open in May – and we are absolutely delighted for him,” said Doug Wright, Global Commercial Director of Wilson Golf. “It’s a real positive that we have so many quality award-winning irons that can be used to win on Tour,” he added.

Waring was playing with a mix of Wilson clubs this weekend – FG Tour V4 irons (4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & PW), an FG Tour V6 9-iron and a C300 6-iron with Nippon ST 105x shafts and multi-compound red/black grips.
