Europe Wins Solheim Cup on US Soil!

For the first time in its 13 year history the European team won the Solheim Cup in Colorado with an 18-10 victory over the United States to retain the title.  The Europeans who went into the last day needed only 3 1/2 pointsalways looked favourite to retain the title despite the US fans efforts to unsettle them with a huge amount of vocal support for their own players.  The European fans it is fair to say gave as good as they got only limited by their numbers!

Swede Caroline Hedwall is the first player in the Cups history to win all five of her matches beating Michelle Wie with a solid birdie on the 18th taking Europes lead to 14 – 7.  Following a great performance in Ireland in 2011 Hedwall bas the back bone of a superb team who remained focus on the task throughout.

But the real star of the show was Europes Charley Hull, the 17 year year old who only turned pro this summer.  Charley showed amazing confidence both on the course and during press interviews.  She led the way in the singles thrashing Paula Creamer 5 & 4 only to then show here youthful innocence by getting Creamer to sign her ball for a friend back home!

Hull told BBC Sport: “I gave myself high hopes and I just wanted to prove people wrong. I’m 17 and people were wondering if I could perform under the pressure but I go out and enjoy it, which takes care of the pressure.

“Before the match I just thought ‘bring it’ because I beat her on Saturday and I’d try to do it again.”

The team seen in outfits supplied by Abacus looked great throughout the event.

Commenting on Sunday’s previously undisclosed matchplay outfits, Chris Mattsson, designer at Abacus Sportswear, said: “Every year that we have been working with the Ladies European Tour and the Solheim Cup, the details about Sunday’s match outfits have been kept a secret until the day itself – even the players don’t know what they’ll be wearing!

“The final day’s outfit features Europe’s customary blue and gold combination. However, Liselotte Neumann has selected a lighter shade of blue, in keeping with the colour scheme of this year’s overall match wardrobe.”

GOLF RETAILING would like to congratulate the European team on such a landslide victory.  With the Ryder Cup and the Solheim Cup on our side of the pond we as a continent have a lot to be proud of!
