Three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington will play in his 22nd Open Championship when he leads the list of Wilson Tour players teeing it up on the Angus links on Thursday.

The last player to win The Open at Carnoustie, Padraig will be using the brand’s signature FG Tour V6 irons (6-9), over familiar territory following his dramatic play-off victory over Sergio Garcia more than a decade ago.

The popular Irishman, who has played Wilson Staff clubs since 1998 in one of golf’s longest partnerships, will also have an FG Tour V4 utility iron; a C300 5 iron; a C300 hybrid 17*; FG Tour PMP 48*, 52* and 56* wedges; and the Infinite Southside putter in his new Tour bag. The new bag is in the brand’s standout red colourway and features a new logo, which will also adorn his cap.

“Wilson is delighted to be back at The Open with Padraig, as this historic event holds great memories for us as a team,” said Global Commercial Director, Doug Wright.

Alongside Harrington, Wilson will also have Challenge Tour player Jack Senior in the field, playing the flagship FG Tour V6 irons (3-9), Jack also carries FG Tour PMP 46*, 52* and 58* wedges and will wear Wilson apparel.

Jack qualified after finishing joint second at St Annes Old Links, following rounds of 68 and 66 in the 36-hole final qualifying event. The 29-year old turned professional in 2011 and has made one Open appearance before at Royal Troon in 2016.

Open debut

Another Wilson player teeing it up in this year’s 147th Open Championship is James Robinson. Making his Open debut, the 29-year old from Wigan, shot 67-65 for a 12 under par total, which won him the 36-hole Final Qualifying competition at St Annes Old Links by two strokes.

James has competed on The EuroPro Tour (becoming the first amateur ever to win an event), Challenge Tour and European Tour (2016), but was unable to keep his card. He gave up playing full-time last year to work towards his PGA qualification, where he combines working in the shop at Clarke’s Golf Centre in Rainford, Merseyside with teaching around 30 lessons a week.

Playing his only competitive golf in the last 12-months, James won both regional and final Open qualifying.

“Qualifying for the Open was my boyhood dream. When I got drawn at St Annes’, I didn’t just want to qualify – I wanted to win it. To qualify the way I did and to play in The Open at Carnoustie is just incredible,” said James.

James will be supported by Wilson this week with a Tour bag, cap and the FG Tour V6 irons (3-PW).

“To have Jack and James in the field is a testament to their hard work during qualifying and the trust they put into the FG Tour V6 irons when the pressure was on,” added Doug. “We’ll support them all week and give them as much encouragement as possible from our brand-new Tour truck, where they can spend some down time or make any adjustments to their Wilson irons and wedges depending on the playing conditions,” added Doug.

The FG Tour V6 irons are designed for the golfer who values ultimate feel, precision shot-shaping and feedback. Made from 8620 carbon steel, the irons feature split tungsten weighting through the set offering improved sole camber and bounce for added distance, versatility and optimal ball flight.

Featuring Precision Milled Performance (PMP) technology that widens the milled HM grooves for maximum spin on full shots, the PMP wedges incorporates eleven laser-etched Micro Spin lines between each groove, creating full control and increased spin. Three sole designs -Traditional, Tour Grind and Wide – plus numerous loft and bounce variables create nearly 100 playability options through custom fitting.
