Westonbirt GC ladies’ win for charity

Westonbirt Golf Club ladies’ section was named as the winner of the 2014 EWGA Trust Stableford Competition at the annual meeting of England Golf. They beat over 160 other clubs to claim the prize of a laptop computer. Ladies’ sections were invited to fundraise for the EWGA Trust, a charity that supports girls’ golf. They were asked to make a donation based on the points scored by the top ten players in their competition and nationwide they raised over £2600.

In Westonbirt’s nominated competition the top ten players together amassed a superb 383 points and they finished two points clear of Bracken Ghyll in Yorkshire. Third place went to Batchworth Park, Hertfordshire.

Ladies’ captain Mary Griffiths won the stableford with 40 points, pipping a fellow competitor on countback. She said, “We are delighted to win this. We are a small club, but very friendly and we’re known for our teas!”

The ladies’ section are long standing supporters of the Trust and their junior section includes some girl members who are coming through coaching schemes run by Kirsty Taylor, a former Ladies European Tour professional. The EWGA Trust was founded about 30 years ago and makes grants and awards bursaries to help girls and young women start and stay in golf. More at: www.englandgolf.org
