Pachesham goes big on junior golfers

The Pachesham Golf Centre, close to Junction 9 on the M25 at Leatherhead in Surrey, enjoyed its busiest ever junior programme over the recent school holidays and is set to extend the offering for young golfers in the months ahead.

The facility, which boasts extensive practice and teaching facilities as well as a 6-hole course, added Free Taster Sessions for the first time to introduce children under 10 to the sport. It also held a series of popular Junior Summer Camps for youngsters up to the age of 16.

“We started the free sessions in early August and had a great response from parents wanting to give their children the feel of the sport at a facility where they can really grow into the game,” said Head Professional James Warrington. “The sessions ran from Monday to Friday during the whole of August and we introduced many youngsters to the game for the first time, including newcomers who attended the Girls’ Only sessions.

“And to coincide with the sessions, we arranged for a US Kids Demo so they could try out and often purchase equipment designed for their age group. Now we’ve established a wider reputation for supporting juniors, we’re determined to enhance the offering,” added James.

The fun-packed Junior Summer Camps were staged every Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 4pm, so parents could drop their children off in the morning and collect them later in the afternoon over the holiday period.

During that time, the youngsters would spend three hours training for a Junior Passport, tackle a putting challenge and play for two hours on the golf course before watching Golf Foundation videos about rules and etiquette, plus a certificate presentation. Some keen players also took part in a six-week Weekend Junior Academy programme, while Under 10’s had fun with Tri-Golf activities.

Outside of the school holiday period, local schools – such as Reeds and Downsend – bring students to take advantage of the regular Junior Academy Coaching programme, which is now based around a new Scotty Cameron putting unit and designated teaching bays on the modern driving range.
