Legends Tour players cash in on SkyCaddie’s Italian Job

SkyCaddie GPS users dominated the final leaderboard at last week’s Senior Italian Open, after the game’s ‘ground-mapping’ experts gave them additional yardage information from tee to green.

SkyCaddie GPS users took home 79% of the €227,000 purse shared among the event’s top twenty finishers, with the event’s winner, five of the top six and fourteen of the top twenty having a SkyCaddie.

SkyCaddie’s head European mapper Steve Winstone travelled to Italy’s Adriatic coast in late October to re-map the championship course at San Domenico Golf, rated among Italy’s finest.

“San Domenico is what we call the ideal SkyCaddie course, with plenty of holes where you cannot see your landing spot” he said. “Without a SkyCaddie you are playing many shots more or less blind, especially from the tee.

“There are some dog-legs such as the 4^th where the Tour players need a run-out distance off the tee, impossible to see with a laser.

“Another example is the cluster of bunkers on the 14th, not all of which are visible from the tee. You have to decide whether to lay up or go for the carry.

“With a SkyCaddie you get instant yardages to what lies beyond the bunkers, as well as yardages for your next shot into the pin – all without leaving the tee.”

Winstone spent just under twelve hours mapping the Par 72 San Domenico golf course on foot using SkyCaddie’s professional surveying equipment, plotting dozens of data points on every hole including the circumference of every bunker, lake and green, including all major green contours.

This wasn’t just because San Domenico Golf was hosting a tour event: it’s what SkyCaddie does every day of the year, on any golf course whatever its level of prestige, and always on foot.

“15 of the 18 greens at San Domenico have significant contours which are impossible to pick up with a laser” said James Holmes, SkyCaddie’s European General Manager. “With no official paper yardage book available for the tournament, SkyCaddie users had a big advantage in picking their spot off the tee and when attacking the pin, and this was clearly borne out in the results.”

The Legends Tour has been using SkyCaddie green sheets to set its pins this year. The PGA is now in its second year of doing the same in all of its national events, and Europro Tour pins are available each week for all SkyCaddie competitors to download.
