The American made the switch to FootJoy HyperFlex golf shoes after noticing key performance gains and is the second player to secure victory in the franchise this season.
Starting the final round just one shot behind the leader, Thomas fired a bogey-free 68 on Sunday, earning a spot in the play-off which he would then go on to win after draining a 21-foot birdie putt on the iconic 18th hole at Harbour Town Golf Links.
On his way to victory, the 31 year-old relied on the athletic performance of FJ’s new HyperFlex golf shoe, purposely designed to empower the golfer athlete.
FootJoy continues to lead the way in the athletic shoe sphere using market-leading technology and premium materials in order to expand the influence of what a performance shoe can achieve.
Since its introduction, the new HyperFlex has had one of the quickest adoption rates on tour the FJ brand has ever seen, with players worldwide opting to put the new model straight into play.
The 16x tour winner has relied on modern classic footwear for the entirety of his junior and professional career but recently decided to transition into the new HyperFlex to help improve performance.
“I’ve worn a classic shoe for pretty much my entire career – Classics, Icon, Premiere, etc. – but I had to make a switch when I tried this HyperFlex,” said Thomas.
“This shoe is perfect – super comfortable and flexible in the right areas, but also gives me all the support I need to make a strong, confident move on the ball.
“We spend our whole career on our feet and it is something in the past that I didn’t pay enough attention to but glad that I did this past off-season as it could be very beneficial in the long run.”
Increasing vertical force was a major factor in Thomas’ switch to HyperFlex. After spending some time at TPI, he discovered that by optimising his ground interaction, he has a better opportunity to achieve higher clubhead speeds.
It’s not just the two-time major champion who has made the switch into the franchise but also the likes of Corey Connors, Francesco Molinari and the Qatar Masters champion, Haotong Li. All of these tour winners were previously sporting a different footwear model until the new HyperFlex launched on tour.
There were also other FJ wins this past weekend with Ashun Wu relying on his Premiere Series footwear to triumph at his national open for the second time at the Volvo China Open. This is the fifth win for Premiere Series this season and continues to be the most trusted shoe model on the DP World Tour.
On the LPGA, the winner of the JM Eagle LA Championship trusted in the supreme traction and stability of Pro/SLX to win her first tour title in just her 4th professional start.
