Scotland’s Pride

We caught up with, Mikhel Ruia Glenmuir and Sunderland of Scotland Managing Director.

How has 2021 been for Glenmuir and Sunderland so far?

We have had a strong 2021 with sales up 50% so far this year vs last year. The challenge now will be to maintain this growth as we navigate potential further lockdowns in the 30 countries that we have presence in as well as further potential UK lockdowns through the winter months. Our men’s golf shirt and ladies’ shirts have seen a huge resurgence given the favourable weather and we saw robust sales of Sunderland golf waterproofs which we envisage will pick up again as we go into Autumn.

Have you been hit by the stock issues effecting the industry this year?

Generally we are finding a bit of a squeeze on the supply chain due to unprecedented pent up demand. This is everything from yarn and fabric prices, accessories such as zips and buttons and of course the shipping and freight costs due to lack of container availability and fewer passenger planes. Luckily we are well placed to mitigate these issues as we use high quality factories based across the UK and Europe and beyond so we are not reliant on any one single country for supply. We also carry one of the largest stock holdings in the golf industry which allows us to continue to serve our customers as they react to increased golf consumer demand which is difficult to forecast.

Tell us a little bit about SS22 and the inspiration behind the collections?

The use of sustainable fabrics and environmentally responsible craftsmanship, is and always will be at the heart of our collections. Our SS22 Glenmuir collection features vibrant colours Cobalt and Sorbet as well as the classic colour Bordeaux incorporating a crisp twist combing white, navy, and light grey. All new colours feature in our cotton and performance golf shirts, our famous golf sweaters made from sustainable 100% organic cotton, Italian merino wool and British lambswool, our jackets and golf midlayers packed with technology and our performance golf trousers.

And what about the Sunderland of Scotland collection?

Our #NEVERWEATHERBEATEN Sunderland of Scotland golf outerwear collection continues to combine technical innovation with style allowing golfers to defy the elements and features new men’s Storm Grey and Ocean for ladies’. Camo and tropical prints have seen record sales and we look forward to expanding these fresh and modern prints.

You’ve made a bold change with your marketing photography, which we think looks great. Does that signify a change in direction for the brand?

Glenmuir is a golf clothing brand that has been at the heart of the game of golf ever since its beginnings in 1891. Whilst Glenmuir’s passion is inspired by its rich legacy and heritage the brand continues to develop, innovate and embrace trends. This beautiful combination of classic and contemporary is what makes Glenmuir and Sunderland of Scotland so unique in the golf industry.

Why should a retailer stock Glenmuir and Sunderland if they don’t already?

There are simply 3 reasons why a retailer should not hesitate to become one of our valued partners: 1) Our elegantly designed classic high quality products attract best in class retail margins; 2) our comprehensive stock service allows retailers to react quickly and not miss out on consumer demand and 3) our market leading in-house embroidery service makes Glenmuir and Sunderland of Scotland the trusted number one choice for club, corporate and event golf clothing and merchandise.
