Team Galvin Green star Christiaan Bezuidenhout jumped into the world’s top 50 and achieved a life-long ambition to put his name on a famous South African trophy when he eagled the last at the Dimension Data Pro-Am event at the Fancourt Golf Estate on the Western Cape last weekend.
Holding a two-shot advantage over the field on the final day, he reached the par-5 last hole of the co-sanctioned European Challenge Tour event trailing his countryman and 2016 winner George Coetzee by a stroke. He then hit a superb second shot to six feet and sank the eagle putt to finish on 25-under par for the tournament and a shot clear of his main rival.
His aggregate score of 264 beat the previous best in the tournament by four shots. His name is now on the trophy alongside major-winning compatriots like Louis Oosthuizen, Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen.
“To win with an eagle on the last is really special,” said Christiaan, who re-signed with Galvin Green at the start of the season and was runner up in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic last month. “This is a special event for the South African boys and I’ve always wanted to put my name on that trophy. I’ve done it now, so I’m pretty pleased,” he added.
Christiaan kept his cool during a tense finish in temperatures of around 22° wearing a VENTIL8 PLUS MERELL shirt in faded denim, matched with a pair of lightweight NOAH trousers and a WAYNE belt, both in navy.
Now ranked eighth on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and 48th in the Official World Golf Rankings (87th at the end of 2019), Christiaan will be appearing later this week in the heat of Mexico at the first WGC event of the year. The victory in South Africa also earns him a spot in the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational in Memphis in July.
