The Richmond Golf Club donates £40,000 to On Course Foundation

The Richmond Golf Club is at the forefront of golf’s drive to support Britain’s injured Armed Forces personnel and veterans after raising more than £40,000 for the On Course Foundation in the last year.

Club Captain Jeremy Williams (in the left of the picture with Carl Shadrake) revealed the final amount for his nominated charity at his farewell dinner at the end of his captaincy before presenting a cheque to On Course Foundation ambassador Carl Shadrake, a former sergeant in the Grenadier Guards who was wounded twice while serving in Afghanistan.

The impressive efforts of the London club means that it has now raised more than £350,000 for local charities and worthy causes in the last nine years.

Williams said: “One of my greatest pleasures this year has been my involvement with my nominated charity, the On Course Foundation, and the two charity golf days we held were real highlights for me.

“I especially remember one of their ambassadors, amputee Mike Browne, challenging members to a nearest the pin competition on the eighth hole on Captain’s Charity Day. He was hitting a seven-iron about 180 yards and only lost 15 times out of about 100, and he did all that with only one leg. He hadn’t touched a club until October 2013 and now plays off four. Many thanks to the generosity of all of you and others in helping us raise the astonishing sum of £40,040.05.”

On Course Foundation is the only dedicated golf charity supporting the recovery of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. It helps individuals, both serving and ex-Armed Forced members, to rebuild their lives by giving them the opportunity to play golf and gain employment in the golf industry.

On receiving the donation on behalf of On Course, Shadrake said: “When I was medically discharged from the Army I was very lucky that the On Course Foundation was able to help me get back on my feet and rebuild my life. It is only with the sort of generosity shown by your Club and its members that On Course Foundation is able to help hundreds of injured and disabled service personnel like me every year.”
