TaylorMade slides in with new driver

TaylorMade has introduced the new SLDR driver – featuring a sliding adjustable sole weight – and the company claims it is the longest driver it has ever produced, according to robot testing.

The SLDR was due in TaylorMade stockists from mid-August with a price tag of £349, and the American company claims it has already become the most popular driver on the PGA Tour. At the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in August, 12 golfers put the SLDR into play, including Dustin Johnson, Darren Clarke and Justin Rose. “It goes like a dream,” tweeted Clarke.

The two primary technological advancements of the SLDR are a sliding weight and re-positioned centre of gravity, which TaylorMade has pushed low and towards the front of the clubhead. The company says the forward position of the CG should boost a higher launch, faster ball speed and lower spin.

The sliding weight simplifies the moveable weight concept in metal woods, as golfers can slide the 20-gram weight to one of 21 points on a track that runs across the clubhead sole. The sliding scale is labeled ‘Draw’ near the heel and ‘Fade’ near the toe to eliminate any possible confusion as to what shot shape the weight position will promote. Robot testing has shown that the weight positions can result in shot dispersion range of up to 30 yards.
