Success for Golf at Sports Personality of the Year

Rory Mcilroy came up short last night at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Glasgow after being a bookies favourite.  The Irish man took second place to Formula 1’s Lewis Hamilton.

“It’s been a great night and to be considered for the award is an honour. Lewis had a great year, a second world championship, some big battles with Nico Rosberg and dominated the Formula One scene. It’s something I followed closely,” he said.

“I still got a lot of support out there and to finish second was a great achievement. Hopefully if I can achieve just as much next year, it might just inspire me to go one better.”

Whilst Rory came up short his 2014 Ryder Cup Captain Paul Mcginley lifted the Coach of the Year gong following his excellent planning in the two year run up to the event which also took part in Scotland at Gleneagles in September.

“I’m very, very honoured,” said McGinley.

“I need to thank the people of Scotland. Your support was huge. I had 12 great players, 12 great personalities and a great backroom team and vice captains,” the four-time winner of the Ryder Cup added.

“My plan as coach was to allow the vice-captains to follow each game. I had a plan and was getting the information fed in and was plotting the next move.

“We never had one hand on the cup. A lot of thought went in to the order. I did not think of myself as a cheerleader. I was managing the situation as best as possible,” said the Irishman.
