Siem chips in to win BMW Masters

At the first event of the European Tour’s Final Series, Marcel Siem won a three-man play-off against Alexander Levy and Ross Fisher at the BMW Masters at the Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai, China. Siem started the day trailing Levy by five strokes and had a six foot putt for victory in regulation play, but pushed the ball wide of the hole. He then compensated for his missed chance by spectacularly chipping in for a birdie at the first extra hole, the 18th, with his rivals on the green and waiting to putt. Neither player could match him.

Siem added to his three previous European Tour titles after switching to Wilson Staff FG Tour V2 irons in January and playing the Titleist Pro V1x ball. He wore Ecco Biom golf shoes featuring Natural Motion technology.

Commenting Siem stated, “I had never lost in a play-off before, so I thought: ‘There is no way I can lose this’. This win means a lot to me. Thank you to BMW, they are a great supporter of the tour. I always wanted to win a tournament of the Final Series and now I have. I had two surgeries this year and really didn’t expect to be at the top in such a strong field. To be the winner now is unbelievable.”

The win moves Siem from 53rd to fourth in The Race to Dubai. He also moves to just outside the top-70 on the Official World Golf Rankings and earns a spot in the WGC-HSBC Champions event, also in Shanghai and the Turkish Airlines Open – before the season’s finale at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on 20 November.
