R&A Allow DMD’s in Amateur Competition

The use of distance measuring devices (DMDs) will be allowed in R&A amateur events in 2014. Since 2006 DMDs have been covered by an optional Local Rule, and this Local Rule will be introduced for The R&A’s amateur events only. The Open Championship or any qualifying event for The Open Championship is specifically excluded.

While this decision for is for R&A events, The R&A Championship Committee is not making a recommendation for other championship organisers and it remains a matter for individual committees and clubs to decide whether or not they want to allow the use of such devices in their competitions.
