Onyria Golf Resorts lands two of Portugal’s top tourism awards …

Onyria Golf Resorts landed two of Portugal’s ‘national tourism Oscars’ at the Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2013 last week, winning both the ‘Best Five-Star Hotel’ and ‘Best Golf Course’ categories.

Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort, in Lagos, landed the title of the country’s best golf course for the second successive year, while the boutique Onyria Marinha Edition Hotel & Thalasso, in Cascais – already acclaimed as the third-best hotel in the world in the TripAdvisor® Travelers’ Choice Awards 2013 – was awarded the title of best five-star hotel in Portugal.

It was the 10th anniversary of the Publituris Travel Awards, which were created by the country’s leading travel trade magazine, Publituris, to reward the best in Portuguese tourism.

The awards, regarded by those who work in Portugal’s tourism industry as the ‘national tourism Oscars’, were presented to João Pinto Coelho, commercial director of Onyria Golf Resorts, at a ceremony in Monte Claros, in Monsanto, Lisbon, in the presence of many of the industry’s ‘big players’.

Pinto Coelho said: “We are very happy and proud of this award. For the second consecutive year Onyria Palmares Golf is considered as the best golf course in Portugal, which is extraordinary considering that in our country there are many of the best courses in Europe. The fact that we are recognised by industry professionals increases our willingness to do more, so that Onyria Palmares Golf continues to raise standards and awareness nationally and internationally.

“It is also with great pride and satisfaction that Onyria Marinha Edition Hotel & Thalasso is recognised in the prestigious Publituris awards. Although it has already have been determined by TripAdvisor to be the third best hotel in the world, being recognised by top industry professionals in Portugal is absolutely phenomenal. This award reinforces our position and ethos, emphasising the quality and service we provide every day to our customers. We want to continue to achieve more and do even better with the help of our dedicated and motivated staff.”

The election process began with the appointment of a short list by Publituris editorial team, before being whittled down to three finalists for each award, via public vote, before a jury of 13 industry figures determined the winner.

The multi-award-winning, family-owned and run Onyria Golf Resorts has been racking up the accolades during the past couple of years including being hailed in the annual readers’ travel awards of the UK’s best-selling golf magazine, Today’s Golfer.

Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort, in the Algarve – which reopened only in 2011 following an extensive redesign by Robert Trent Jones Jnr – was joint runner-up in the best Portuguese course category. And the five-star Quinta da Marinha Resort, on the Lisbon Golf Coast – which features a course designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr – was third in the category of best Portuguese golf resort.

Palmares was also celebrating its part in helping the Algarve to win the title of Europe’s best-value golf destination, for the second successive year. And Onyria Golf Resorts itself was named the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) golf tourism supplier of the year, at its annual awards dinner in November.

The multi-award-winning 27-hole set-up at Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort will follow Onyria’s traditional business model, with plans for a five-star hotel and a selection of plots for villas which have been released on to the property market. With breathtaking views, Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort offers a unique location in the Algarve with dazzling views to the Ria de Alvor, Meia-Praia and to the town of Lagos, TripAdvisor’s ‘best holiday destination in the world’ for 2012.

Located in the delightful Quinta da Marinha – close to Cascais, on the Lisbon coast – the luxurious five-star boutique Onyria Marinha Edition Hotel & Thalasso opened in April 2011 and has previously been awarded “best service quality” from Turismo de Portugal. It sits adjacent to the Robert Trent Jones Sr-designed Quinta da Marinha golf course which enjoys magnificent views to the Atlantic Ocean and the mountain of Sintra.

The Quinta da Marinha Resort offers hospitality in the 198-room, five-star Hotel Quinta da Marinha, a member of the luxury collection of the Great Hotels of the World group, and in 40 one or two-bedroom townhouses.
