Dixon triumphs in Jamega Tour season opener

European Tour winner and Bridgwater professional David Dixon turned on a masterful display to claim victory by four shots in the Jamega Tour’s season-opening event at Machynys Peninsular Golf & County Club, Swansea. The 38-year-old was the only player to finish below par in testing conditions during the two days of competition on the Welsh coast links. A silver medal winner as leading amateur at The Open in 2001, Dixon set out with an opening 69, a new course record and the joint-best round of the weekend, to establish a three-shot lead.

A one over par 73 in the second round consolidated his position on the 7,121-yard championship course and held off the challenge of Ryan Boyns, Nick Cunningham, Craig Farrelly and James Watts. Yorkshire’s Marcus Armitage was the only player to register under par on day two; a bogey-free 69 lifting him to a joint-tenth place finish after a disappointing opening 79 had put victory beyond reach.

The Howley Hall professional was one of 13 players separated by just two shots in a fierce chase for a runner-up spot, among them local favourite and 2002 Ryder Cup hero, Phillip Price, who improved by three to shoot par in the second round and tie for sixth.

There was an additional incentive for the amateur golfers to perform, because the Single Figure Golfer Tour that runs concurrently with the Jamega Tour is offering a series of bonus prizes, topped by entry into next year’s Algarve Pro Golf Tour. Marcus Sewell from Pednam Place in Swanley, Kent led the way, tied 29th overall with rounds of 79 and 76. It gave him a commanding seven shot victory over the next amateur, Chris Brown from the Royal North Devon Golf Club

With the gracious hospitality at the clubhouse and keen support from the Machynys members who came out in their numbers, it marked an impressive start to the 2015 Jamega Tour.
