BERNHARD ACADEMY DELIVERS GCMA’S INAUGURAL ADVANCED MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE WORKSHOP AT MOORTOWN GOLF CLUB

The Bernhard Academy, in collaboration with the Golf Club Managers’ Association (GCMA), has successfully delivered its first-ever Golf Course Management for Golf Club Managers workshop – a key component of the GCMA’s new Advanced Management Certificate programme.

Held at the Bernhard Academy facility at the prestigious Moortown Golf Club in Leeds, the three-day workshop brought together eight golf club managers seeking to improve their understanding of golf course operations and the critical role they play in club success.

The programme, written and led by the expert team at the Bernhard Academy, provided intensive training on course management principles, budgeting and finance, and sustainable practices. It was designed to bridge the knowledge gap between club managers and course managers, promoting stronger collaboration and operational cohesion.

Phil Helmn, Programme Leader for Agronomy, Leadership and Management at the Bernhard Academy, led the sessions. He emphasised the importance of understanding the technical and strategic responsibilities of golf course managers, and how effective partnerships with the club’s leadership team contribute to overall success.

The workshop concluded with input from GCMA partners and industry experts. Contributors included Dr Marie Athorn of the RSPB, Jimmy Sandison of Rain Bird, and BIGGA’s Jim Croxton and Scott Reeves, who shared best practices and real-world insights on sustainable practices and relationships.

“We’ve had a very successful three days with an extremely receptive group,” said Sami Strutt, Education Director at the Bernhard Academy. “After nine months of development, we’re thrilled to see the programme brought to life and so well received. The GCMA placed its trust in our expertise, and we’re proud of the results.”

Gareth Morgan, Professional Development Manager at the GCMA, added: “It’s been a terrific few days, in which our members explored the intricacies of golf course management. This workshop not only highlights the complex challenges course managers face but also helps build a greater appreciation for their role within club operations. We’re confident that this course will become a cornerstone of our Advanced Management Certificate offering.”
