Roger Southam, an amateur London golfer, is attempting to complete 18 holes in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland by travelling 1,200 miles in less than 24 hours on 17 June. To complete the ‘Sparks Golf Challenge,’ sponsored by Royal & Awesome, he will fly by helicopter, which has been generously donated.
Wearing Royal & Awesome trousers and with less than three hours to complete each round, Southam will play Lough Erne, Northern Ireland; Gleneagles, this year’s Ryder Cup venue in Scotland; Celtic Manor, the former Ryder Cup venue in Wales; and The London Club, England, venue for the 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championships.
Since 1991, Sparks has raised more than £27 million through fundraising initiatives used for pioneering children’s medical research, and Southam is aiming to add £50,000 to the funds. The ‘Sparks Golf Challenge’ requires participants to organise a team of two to four players to play a minimum of 72 holes on a given day this summer, with Royal & Awesome rewarding teams who raise a minimum £400 for the charity with a free pair of trousers for each team member.
The three teams which play the most holes in a day, raise the most money, and record the best Stableford score over 72 holes will be invited to play in the popular Sparks Open at The Oxfordshire on 8 October. To register for the Spark Golf Challenge, visit www.sparks.org.uk/golf
