Wrangaton GC saved by Bovey Tracey GC owners

The future of Dartmoor’s historic Wrangaton Golf Club has been secured following its sale to nearby Bovey Tracey Golf Club. Rescue and recovery specialist Begbies Traynor, was appointed liquidator of Wrangaton (South Devon) Golf Club Ltd on 29 January after the club experienced declining membership subscriptions.

The sale was handled by property consultancy Lambert Smith Hampton and completed on 21 April. The club was sold as a going concern to the Barter family, who own Bovey Tracey GC about 20 miles away. Wrangaton GC includes an 18-hole par-70 golf course with sea views, a practice building, two large barns, shop and clubhouse. The sale price is undisclosed, although it was close to the £500,000 guide price.

Wrangaton GC was established in 1895 and is a member of the 1895 Golf Association, which comprises 47 clubs that were formed in that year. Until 1991 it was a nine-hole course but with the acquisition of an additional 130 acres of open moorland, plus later purchases of 50 acres of adjacent farmland and woodland, a back nine was created in the parkland setting of the new area.

The new membership year expected to commence from May. Formerly competitors, the two clubs, now under the same ownership, will be able to provide members and visitors with a much enhanced golfing experience.

A statement from new owners, the Barter family of Bovey Tracey Golf Club said, “We are delighted and honoured to be taking on ownership of Wrangaton Golf Club and will be working hard, together with our staff to ensure its future success. Being located in such a beautiful part of the world, we know there is real potential for the club to increase its membership and attract golfers from across the country.

“Crucially, we see Wrangaton as complementary to Bovey Tracey, the two clubs will each retain their own identity, but members will have the opportunity for dual membership if they wish, enabling them to play both courses. We will be contacting Wrangaton Golf Club members about new membership arrangements in due course.”
