South West pair end senior season with a hat trick

The South West pair of Jo Shorrocks and Amanda Mayne have completed a hat trick of consecutive wins in England Golf’s end-of-season senior tournament.

They won the popular Brenda King Foursomes by seven shots at Harrogate Golf Club, Yorkshire, where they scored two-over 74 and 79, with the second round played in continuous rain.

“We’re so pleased to win for the third time,” said Mayne, a former England senior international from Saltford, Somerset.

They’ve equalled the record of their good friends, Claire Dowling and Tracy Atkin, who won from 2012-14. “We’ll give them a bit of banter,” said Shorrocks, from Bigbury, Devon.

Their continued success seems to be helping to raise the profile of senior women’s golf in the South-West, reports Shorrocks. Devon has introduced a senior women’s championship this year and another pair, from Royal North Devon, also made the long trip north for the Brenda King tournament.

Shorrocks and Mayne made their trademark slow start to the event and were three over par after playing two holes of the first round. But they came straight back with two birdies and after returning 74 they were five shots clear of the field.

Second place, on countback, went to Janet Melville (Royal Birkdale, Lancashire) and Jo Ashmore (Barnham Broom, Norfolk), who have both represented England at senior level. Third were Kate Evans (Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire) and Sandy Catford (Prince’s, Kent).
