Son Gual has once again been hailed as Mallorca’s number one golf destination – this time by popular website top100golfcourses.co.uk.
The website has recently launched its new continental Europe rankings and Son Gual was listed as the eighth-best course in Spain and the top venue in Mallorca – an exact replication of its performance in Golf World‘s benchmark Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe 2014 rankings.
Son Gual, the only Mallorcan course to feature in the website’s top 100, leapt a staggering 36 places – the second-highest jump – to cement its place as the holiday island’s premier golf destination. It was described as a “must play” and “quite breathtaking”.
And currently available golf-break packages from the four-star Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort Portals Nous, close to the marina at Puerto Portals, are designed to allow visitors to experience for themselves just why the course is so highly regarded.
The €30m Son Gual golf course opened only in 2007 and was ranked 53 in the previous rankings of 2011. However, the judges at Golf World clearly expect the Thomas Himmel-designed track to continue its upward momentum. The magazine described the venue as “one of the finest inland courses on the continent”, and stated: “… there is every chance Son Gual will rise even higher in future lists as it continues to mature into the Mallorcan landscape.”
It continued: “Son Gual is what a modern championship course should be, and, taken together with its fabulous clubhouse and practice facilities, is every inch a serious Tour venue … it stands comparison with our own high-octane parklands The Grove and The Belfry – not least in the conditioning stakes, which is no mean achievement.”
Son Gual features large lakes, 66 bunkers, 800 olive trees – some more than a thousand years old – wild flowers in the rough areas and vineyards in several areas around the course. Just four years after Golf Son Gual opened, it was recognised by Golf World magazine as the number one on the island and ninth best in Spain.
In May 2009 it hosted the Mallorca Senior Open and received gushing praise from a number of participants – former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam even compared the greens to those at Augusta National.
The 1991 Masters winner said: “It’s a bit like Augusta. There are a lot of slopes on the greens. You’ve got to get the ball on the right side of the hole – if you don’t you’ll be struggling. Miss it on the wrong side and you’re dead.”
A three-night, half-board break in a ‘classic’ double room at Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort Portals Nous – including three Son Gual green-fees per person – starts at just €440 per person, while a five-night package, with four rounds of golf each, costs €650pp. These deals are bookable upon request and are available until February 26, 2014.
Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort Portals Nous sits in a scenic and sheltered bay on the west coast and has recently completed a €6m makeover, which has added to its already very African feel.
Golfers can ease their aches, pains and strains in the outdoor pool, replete with massaging water jets and powerful showers to work on sore necks and shoulders. It also includes a spa,
indoor pool (with Jacuzzi), and two restaurants offering a mouth-watering selection of international and Mediterranean cuisine.
