Open spots up for grabs at Joburg Open

The Joburg Open played from 6 to 9 February, is the second event in the Open Qualifying Series and takes place at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club. Three competitors who finish in the top ten and ties, who are not already exempt, will secure places in the field for the 143rd Open Championship played in July at Royal Liverpool.

The Open Qualifying Series includes 14 events in nine countries offering players the opportunity to qualify for The Open at prestigious events on the US PGA Tour, the European Tour, the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Japan Golf Tour and the Sunshine Tour. Four players in the Joburg Open field are already exempt for The Open, including defending champion and six-time winner on the European Tour, Richard Sterne.

Peter Dawson, the Chief Executive of The R&A said, “We are pleased that The Joburg Open will serve as the second Qualifying Series event for the 2014 Open Championship. The aim of the Qualifying Series is to give players from around the world the opportunity to qualify for The Open through leading tournaments on the major tours.”
