Leeds Castle golf course set for fairy tale ending

Leeds Castle Golf Course near Maidstone in Kent is undergoing a two-year investment project to revitalise the nine-hole course set in the grounds of the historic medieval castle. The work should be completed in 2016, 85 years after the course was first opened for play. Work will begin on remodelling parts of the current course in keeping with course architect, Sir Guy Campbell’s original vision. The stunning views of the castle from the course will be restored with the addition of new vistas, created by thinning out existing overgrown woodlands.

To supervise these changes EIGCA Golf Course Architect Alan Walker, has been appointed to the project. He commented, “I’m very excited and privileged to be able to oversee the restoration of this unique course back to its former glory. The programme is both a restoration and an agronomy project. From an architectural standpoint, there will be some changes to the individual golf holes, but the main change will come in 2016 with the re-routing of the nine-hole course and restoring the classic opening hole playing around the moat with the castle in full view. It will be once again one of the most iconic opening golf holes in the world.”

The castle was once used as a royal residence by Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon. In 1935 and 1937, the American Ryder Cup teams stayed at Leeds Castle en route to Southport and Ainsdale for the Ryder Cup matches.

From 1 April, Leeds Castle is introducing a new ‘One Under Card’ giving seven rounds of golf for the price of six with prices starting from just £70. More information at: www.leeds-castle.com/golf
