Kendal ‘special needs’ school applauds golf club’s coaching

A school in Kendal that specialises in supporting pupils with special needs has praised a local golf club for its innovative teaching methods and approach. Carus Green golf club, also based in Kendal, has been holding a series of specially tailored golf lessons with the pupils at Sandgate school, introducing them to the game and developing their learning and social skills.

Sandgate school provides specialist teaching for pupils aged 3-19 with a variety of learning and physical disabilities, and was delighted when the opportunity to partake in golf lessons arose. Teacher, Colin Pearson, has been accompanying a small group of youngsters between the ages of 16-19 to Carus Green, where PGA professional, Dave Turner, has been teaching them during one hour sessions, in which they have used the in-door putting green, driving range and Flightscope facilities.

Colin Pearson commented: “We never believed we would ever have the opportunity to use such fantastic facilities and the pupils have absolutely flourished. It’s the first time any of them have experienced playing golf but they have responded to the instruction so well, listening and applying what they have learned.  Many of them are now progressing with their swing and striking the ball.  Most important has been the emotional effect on these young people.  Their enjoyment and excitement has been such a joy to see.  Dave’s teaching has been superb and we would love to continue over the longer term.”

The initiative has been made possible by ‘Sportivate’ Cumbria Golf Partnership, and Carus’s PGA Professional, Andrew Pickering, whose passion for ensuring that golf is open to all, has driven the project. “I passionately believe that the game of golf should be available to everyone and that physical or learning disabilities shouldn’t be a barrier to enjoying the game,” explains Andrew.  “We are thoroughly enjoying hosting Sandgate school and delighted to watch the progress and development of these super youngsters.”
